On-premises or cloud infrastructures?

Rikkii Richman MBA – 04/02/2021

When planning digital transformation be clear on goals & understand overall business & operational objectives when making cloud decisions. Some organisations opt for public cloud perceiving vastly lower costs & an attraction of OpEx v CapEx. But cloud is not necessarily cheaper than on premise data centres.

In truth, there is no clear-cut answer unless you’re a start-up, then a ‘cloud first’ policy probably makes sense. Strategies will vary from organisation to organisation and are wholly dependent on the purpose, i.e. the problems or challenges that need to be overcome.

Once deployed, if cloud infrastructures are not managed effectively, with DevOps & DBA guys ‘spinning up’ servers at will, costs can easily spiral out of control (think per processor/CPU license models). Multi-cloud infrastructures, GDPR, backups & security also need consideration. Therefore, establishing effective governance frameworks is critical for ongoing success.

With cloud models now increasingly more popular as organisations shift to ‘as a service’ models & digital transformation initiatives gain traction, it is advisable that applications, solutions & services are each considered individually and that sensible technology decisions should come before financial decisions. This often results in hybrid cloud models. And with hybrid cloud models, the technology teams need to be adept at managing both on premise and cloud, so a review of skill sets may identify the need for an investment in training in some technology teams and hiring new skills and expertise to support the future state.
