What is digital transformation? A necessary disruption. A foundational change in how an organisation delivers value to its customers. It’s also a journey of major challenge & opportunity and carries many risks; and as is common with major programs of change, one more likely to fail than succeed.

There are many reasons why digital transformations are slow or fail, including poor leadership, a disconnect between IT & the business, slow employee engagement & substandard operations.

Often, the key culprits of a derailed digital transformation are an obsession with a ‘big bang’ change, a focus on cost-cutting as a business driver & a failure to loop in the business.

When the Board talks about ‘digital’, there’s often pressure to deliver something fast and show results. This creates wrong expectations about how quickly things can be done. Approaching digital transformation as a technology journey, independent of the business, is a recipe for failure. You must ensure that the business owns the process. With the Board and Senior Executives taking ownership of the process, organisations drive end-to-end transformation that includes processes, people, policies & technology. Therefore it is also essential that when planning for digital transformation, organisations must factor in the cultural changes that are required as staff, teams and organisational leaders adjust to adopting and relying on new rays of working and unfamiliar technologies.
