What is PRINCE2®?

PRINCE2® (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured project management methodology and certification programme. It emphasises dividing projects into manageable and controllable stages to ensure successful delivery. Originally developed by the UK government as a standard for managing information systems projects, PRINCE2 has since been adopted worldwide for a variety of industries and projects.

In 2013, the ownership of PRINCE2 was transferred from HM Cabinet Office to AXELOS Ltd, a joint venture between the Cabinet Office and Capita.

PRINCE2 separates the management aspects of project work from specialist activities like design and construction. It provides a robust framework that can be integrated with any type of project, ensuring secure and structured project management.

Why Use PRINCE2?

PRINCE2 has evolved from the real-world experiences of professional project managers and has been refined over time. Its proven principles make it a flexible and adaptable method that organisations can use to enhance their capability and maturity in various business activities, including IT, construction, mergers and acquisitions, research, and product development.


What Does a Project Manager Do?

A project manager is responsible for planning and overseeing the sequence of activities required to deliver a project. In an IT environment, for instance, the project manager determines what networks and hardware will be needed and plans the steps to build the infrastructure.

Delegation is key to effective project management. While the project manager may oversee the plan, they delegate tasks to team members and ensure the work is completed according to schedule. Monitoring progress is crucial, and when work deviates from the plan, the project manager takes corrective action to keep the project on track.


The PRINCE2 Framework

The PRINCE2 method addresses project management through four integrated elements:

  1. Principles: These seven guiding principles must be applied for a project to be considered PRINCE2-compliant. They represent best practices and ensure that the project is managed effectively.
  2. Themes: PRINCE2 themes cover the key aspects of project management that need to be addressed continuously throughout the project. These include risk management, quality, change control, and business case analysis.
  3. Processes: The PRINCE2 processes offer a step-by-step progression through the project lifecycle, from project initiation to closure. This ensures a structured approach to managing the project’s progress.
  4. Tailoring PRINCE2: PRINCE2 is designed to be flexible. The method can be tailored to fit the specific needs and environment of each project, making it versatile for different types of projects and industries.
